touching base

A few days ago the Earth and the Sun positioned themselves in such a way that the hours of daylight and hours of non-daylight are the same. Following the lead of ancient humans we say the season has changed and it’s now fall, which in most latitudes means a change in the weather and possibly the climate

Actually, it’s a bit more complicated than that. What really happens in the center of the sun spends an equal amount of time above and below the horizon no matter what latitude and longitude you happen to be spending the day on. The thing is, even when the sun is partially below the horizon, you still get some daylight, or as my old photography teachers liked to call it, sweet light.

And as long as we’re smashing the idea of the universe as a wholly euclidian place, the atmosphere is probably acting as a prism of sorts meaning parallax comes into play, further screwing up the whole equal daylight/nighttime thing. If such a day exists, it has to occur before or after the equinox proper, but we’re humans and these days the human part of the universe is all about abstraction.

It’s also the time of year when companies who’ve tied their fiscal year to the calendar year have budget money to burn, which means if you’re whoring yourself out with client work you don’t have much of a life in September and October.

That would be me right now. Portland brewery stock dipped on the news.

Every so often I have an old pang of “I’m a corporate sellout whore”. Then I remember I can afford to buy shit like this without going into debt and I’m much less concerned.

Health wise I’m a doing so so. My perennial flu has left the building and my fucked up skin is starting to get a bit better. Of course, I suspect my recent week of personal prohibition might have something to do with that, which is cause of concern. Alcohol is supposed to be good for me.

About a week and a half ago I fucked up my ankle dancing and it’s still a bit twichy. I’m not limping or anything, but if I twist it just right there’s a sharp jolt to my brain that says “You’re getting older son, knock that shit off”.

I hope you’re all doing well out there in fantasy land. If you’re not happy make sure your not happiness is working to get you to a happy place; consciousness doesn’t come with a money back guarantee.

Back to the bit mines.
